Treatment of Childhood Obesity

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Treatment of Childhood ObesityThe treatment of childhood obesity is not an easy task, either for medical or family or for children and today the treatment is based on changing lifestyles, which involves the alteration of their eating habits and physical.

The older the child, the harder it is to practice these changes, but not impossible. In the latest research on overweight in childhood, among other things, it was found that 8% of Spanish children come to school without breakfast.

The cornerstones of obesity treatment
The method used to treat childhood obesity is largely based on the combination of a limited diet with increased physical activity, nutrition education and behavior change. But that will only be effective if the child has the support and encouragement of his family. The child behavior therapy begins with learning self-control.

For the diet to take effect it is necessary that the child receives social stimuli and reinforcement through positive messages, so that he can improve self-esteem and feel more confident. In other words, the initial work is based in particular on combating anxiety and depression, feelings that can lead to increased weight of a child.

It is important to know the feeding habits and behavior of the child and family. Knowing what to eat, a meal interval to another, the exercise they perform, as well as leisure habits. From that you can better identify what causes child obesity. Changing habits through behavioral therapy is an essential component in treating overweight children.

Involvement of parents by age of child
When the child is under 5 years old, are the parents who must lead the treatment, ie answer the child’s all that matters to therapy. From 5 to 9 years, children have more autonomy in treatment, although surveillance is necessary and the responsibility of parents. Only from 9 or 10 years is that the child will have more responsibility and can respond with almost complete freedom to treatment.

Physical exercises
Physical activities should be applied parallel to the diet. Initially, an activity more attractive look and is more in keeping with the interests and capabilities of the child. We begin with gentle movements to which the child grows gradually adapting. If ordering heavy exercise at first the child may be frightened, tired, and ultimately reject it.

Exercise should be gentle at first, but developed continuously, daily, and make it fun and interesting. And it is important for the child to practice and share it with 2 or 3 people at most.

Important tips on childhood obesity
- At the same time as making physical activity a child’s life should be reduced by the time he devotes to television or other sedentary activities.

- It has been shown that the use of drugs in the treatment of childhood obesity is not entirely effective.

- The earlier you detect the problem of overweight in children and treated, the better the result.

- The treatment will only be effective if the child has the support and encouragement of his family

- It is easier to change the behavior of children from their parents, but if you can get the benefit of all.

- The treatment is not processed equally to all children. You must consider the character, disposition, interests and abilities of each child. Every child is a different world and must be treated equally.

Childhood Obesity – Diagnosis

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Detection of overweight is a simple task, just take a look periodically on the scale and be attentive to what is seen as normal weight for age, height or physique. The problem arises when this becomes habitual or overweight tends to increase without noticeable the possibility of reversing the situation naturally. That’s when the family must take action on the matter and referred to a specialist.

With the slightest suspicion that any metabolic complication may arise should see a doctor or dietitian. In any case, the practitioner must assess the overall lifestyle of the child, his pace and level of physical activity and eating behavior that follows. But you must also learn about how to cook, the type of food, the amounts used to eat the child, order in meals (breakfast, lunch, snacks) and schedules.

Although this information is essential, not is the only or even the most important thing to identify: childhood obesity is the result of a complex equation involving the genetic, environmental, socioeconomic and certainly psychological. This is part of family tradition and relationship that keeps the child (including parents) with food. It is imperative, therefore, the parent company in the dietary consultation to resolve any doubts that the child has the questions you might ask your dietitian or doctor regarding your diet. (more…)

Childhood obesity: prevention and treatment

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

In theory, prevention and treatment of childhood obesity is quite simple. If you consume fewer calories than expended, weight loss, on the contrary, if you consume more calories than you need, is increased. But in practice, making the scale needle move a few inches to the left becomes much more complicated.

In developed countries there has been a change in eating habits due to the overabundance of high calorie foods and attractants. In addition, the lifestyle has changed dramatically and now are preferred sedentary recreational activities, and only during exercise. This makes it very difficult to lose weight.

The childhood obesity is a serious disease, considered a top priority in public health. The problem is that it is very clear what is the best way to approach treatment. The prevention and treatment strategies that exist today, are mainly focused on school or family.

Healthy education in school
based prevention programs in schools are aimed at all students, not just those children with obesity problems. It aims to promote healthy eating and fun physical activity among children.

These projects include practical demonstrations of the principles taught. It changes the composition of school meals, reducing fat and increasing fruit and vegetable servings. Also, develop action plans to increase time spent in physical activities during the school day.

But, of course, the success of such initiatives depends greatly on the enthusiasm of teachers and their training in the principles and practices of a healthy lifestyle.

The family health center
there other programs that focus on the family unit, on the basis that unless you encourage all the family to develop healthy habits is very difficult for children to maintain the learned in the school curriculum.

Most of these studies has, directly or indirectly, with the collaboration of medical personnel or social workers. Its aim is to change the entire family to ensure the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle long term, even after completing the program.

Problems of existing approaches
The results obtained so far, as a rule, programs for school-based intervention have failed to reduce the high rate of childhood obesity. Meanwhile, studies of family therapy achieved favorable changes in weight loss long term, but only in highly motivated people.

Possibly the reason for these modest results lies in the ineffectiveness of the recommendations, both dietary and physical activity on, as indicated in these programs.

The increase in sedentary activities like television, video games and computers, lack of urban and suburban spaces that encourage lead active lifestyles, the greater tendency to eat out, and the fact that rations seem more abundant other reasons for the limited success of these programs.

Even so, it is considered worthwhile to conduct studies of this type. Future research may be based on a combination of stimuli in school and at home, with a broader approach to healthy lifestyle.

Children Take Too Many Calories

Monday, October 25th, 2010

childhood obesityToday, the society in which we live we have plenty of food, the main consequence of radiation that are supercharged (if we spent a couple of days without eating just would notice our bodies, insurance). Who else should take care of food are small, since the kids are too many calories.

The lifestyle that we have implemented makes children spend the day eating and, even worse, not only do so without restraint, but also do so in abundance, with bad habits and taking too many calories. No doubt the bad habits that children are getting used today makes it promotes childhood obesity.

Leading a sedentary life is another factor that binds with the higher intake of calories among children. One of the best ways to safeguard the health and infant feeding is to eliminate the saturated fat in the diet of children and promote healthy diet: fruits, vegetables, instead of buns, cakes, sweets or fast food.

Obesity is a problem in childhood (and in the adult, of course), which can produce both psychological and physical disorders, to heart problems. Thus, diseases such as hypertension or diabetes are more ballots to occur if care is not calorie intake.

Thus, we can see that now eats too much, much more than what our body needs. Sometimes we give children the best food, and therefore force them to eat, although we are not aware that they can be supercharged. It is difficult to establish a balanced diet as it is structured society, but you must maintain the health of children based on balanced diets. Win them and we all win.
